Selling to independents: Loyal Beagle lessons

Stamps and rewards for small businesses taught me more about restraint than any design system did.

What building for small businesses taught me about restraint.

Independents don’t have a design team, an IT department or a marketing budget. They have a counter, a regular and a till. Every feature I considered for Loyal Beagle had to survive that context — which turned out to be the best filter I’ve ever designed against.

The lesson that kept arriving: restraint isn’t the absence of features, it’s the discipline of knowing which ones earn their keep in a six-minute window between customers.

A loyalty app should feel less like an app and more like the stamp card it replaced — just without the lost cards.

No paper cards, no loyalty-app fatigue: that one line was the whole brief. Everything that didn’t serve it was cut, and the cuts are the product.
